2017.10.14  Animation Master Class Ft. Ralph Sosa

Yeah so weeks ago I met Mr. Ralph Sosa, one of the directors of The Simpsons. He told us the origin of The Simpsons and shared some tips about how to build a brand and how to tell good stories.

I'm just gonna write some of those that I had learned that day:)
Take The Simpsons and a recent hit show Rick and Morty for example, they both started from short clips. Mr. Sosa told us to start from a short project or else you'll be like some producers, spent tons of time making a pilot, but if it doesn't get adopted......congrats 👏👏  YOU WASTED YOUR TIME AND GOT NOTHING

4 tips to Success
Make short clips
Make good use of the media
Build up your social network
Be unique

"Be open to change and deliver unique content to market that has no comparison."

Use your characters to lead audiences into this mythology world you created.
I.e. Luke Skywalker(Star Wars) was just a farm boy who didn't know what's happening in the outside world. // Neo(The Matrix) used to live a normal life without knowing anything about Matix or he is THE ONE. // Eggsy(Kingsman) was just a kid on the street before he was recruited into the secret service.       Protagonists represent Audiences     Knew nothing but then they explore the world.

Make others resonate with
Don't make things that only some people will understand like let's do a Eastern/Western culture related show, NONONONONONO !!!! if you want your show to make a huge hit all over the world, find something that most people had experienced. ex. Family, School, Love....etc
Time is your worst enemy, he said 90% of the workers in their studio had divorced due to working too much....lack of being with their family. In order to reduce time, teamwork is really important.

If you got some great ideas but you can't express, then it's meaningless, cuz others can never know this amazing ideas of yours.

During the Q&A session I asked Mr. Sosa how to handle edgy jokes. He told me in America, you can't target a small group of people. It's ok to call everyone stupid, but not only a minority. Besides the character who makes this kind of jokes must learn a lesson in the end of the episode.
Bonus: If you're going to mock a person/brand you can only choose two from the elements below: 1.Name 2.Appearance 3.Sound      if u mock all of them in the same time, you'll probably get sued. lol
